as far as I understand, the ODBC backend support has not disappeared from
SOCI. It is still on the trunk of the CVS code base:
http://soci.cvs.sourceforge.net/viewvc/soci/src/backends/odbc/

So, if you check-out the code directly from the CVS repository, you'll have
(back) your ODBC support!

Moreover, I'll strive to add it on the "full-GNU-Autotoolisable" version of
SOCI (
http://opentrep.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/opentrep/trunk/soci/soci/backends/)...
unless the patches (http://denisarnaud.fedorapeople.org/) are incorporated
before on the CVS code base :)
