Arnold will render out to png's as well. .Sgi & .exr for higher bit levels.
If it's heading for flame/smoke then I think sgi's are the best best for import speed as it's a native format. Might not be true any more but it used to reduce import times for heavy sequences hugely. Tif's & tga's always remind me of 1970's & concrete for some reason. I get a sinking feeling when ever I'm given them to deal with.
