Australian-based PhD Scholarship (up to $30,000) : Benefits and Mechanisms of Adaptation for Essential Tremor Patients Performing Resistance Training
We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a Honours or Masters degree in health, exercise or sport science, physiotherapy, neuroscience, bio-engineering or similar areas of study to undertake a 3-year PhD scholarship in a project funded by the International Essential Tremor Foundation. This is a joint project involving the Faculty of Health Sciences and Medicine at Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia and School of Rehabilitation Sciences, Griffith University Gold Coast, Australia. The intended project seeks to improve the health and quality of life of individuals with essential tremor via the use of resistance training. Specifically, this PhD aims to extend our recently published preliminary work on the benefits of resistance training for individuals with essential tremor, and gain insight into the central and/or peripheral nervous system mechanisms associated with resistance training that may cause improvements in movement control. This study will be the first to examine the effects of resistance training on essential tremor patients by combining real-world assessments of manual dexterity with detailed assessments of neuromotor function. Expected starting time would be early January 2012. Requirements Experience in biomechanical and/or electrophysiological data collection techniques e.g. accelerometry, electromyography, force transducers and associated data analysis using Excel, Matlab, Labview, SPSS and/or SAS is required. Some experience with essential tremor patients or other movement disorder groups and exercise rehabilitation would also be advantageous but not essential. Supervisor Team: Associate Professor Justin Keogh, Bond University, Gold Coast, Australia and Dr Justin Kavanagh, Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia Further Details The scholarship is valued at up to $AUS 30,000 (~$US 31,000) per year and also includes free tuition fees and generous project expenses and conference travel opportunities. Applications are welcome from applicants both within Australia and from overseas. If you wish to apply, please initially contact the primary supervisor Associate Professor Justin Keogh on jke...@bond.edu.au or 617 5595 4487 or Dr Justin Kavanagh on j.kavan...@griffith.edu.au to express your interest. All applications should be submitted by 30th September 2012 in order to be considered for this scholarship.
