Not being a sculptor, let me make some comments from the 'other side'.

I had just spent 20 some hours on airplanes to get to Soeul, Korea. It
was late afternoon, cool, with patches of snow on the ground. I got
checked into the hotel, and was a little anxious about the presentation
I had to give the next day, so i went for a walk in the hotel's garden.
Turns out they had quite a collection of stone sculptures in the
garden. Most of them I glanced at and thought "that's nice". Where the
path made a curve at the top of the front hill there was a reddish piece
(probably granite) half hidden by a bush. It was a very stylized
representation of two lovers. They were standing side by side, with his
arm around her, and her head leaning against his shoulder. The statue
was probably four feet tall, 18" front to back and 3 feet wide. Nowhere
did any recess exceed 2", the shapes were blockish with rounded corners
(as I said, it left a lot to the imagination).

This was 14 years ago, and I still tell people about this piece. Have
no idea who the artist was (couldn't read the Korean plaque).

My point? Most of us guess that making a sculpture is time consuming
work. We really don't care - most of us also have our obcessions that
consume inordinate amounts of time. When the 'lay person' sees the
right piece at the right moment, they will more than happy to talk about
and will spend many pleasant moments recalling the incident.

You may have questioned why a non scuptor (ex-mathematician) is on this
list. I carve stone into miniatures for dollhouses. Benches, sinks,
tombstones etc. For me, a 10 lb. stone makes a lot of pieces.

If I were to meet Ron Masa, I expect I would converse with him for
considerable time on elbows and fingers. I find this type of thing
fascinating. Who knows, maybe I would learn to appreciate sculpture
more.
