These measures threaten the lives of Palestinians as they have lead to cutting of essential goods and needs. A few effects of the stricter closure are summarized in the points below. But before mentioning these points, please note that these measures have been in effect since the beginning of the Intifada. The difference today is that they are being implemented more strictly than before. Some of the effects of the closure are: - Stopping the flow of food goods and medical supplies to Palestinian towns and population centers: If this measure continues for a few more days, the already impoverished Palestinian population will face a severe shortage in food products. In addition, the scare medical supplies currently available will cease to exist; thus effectively paralyzing medical services. - Prevention of movement of the people: This measure violates peoples rights on a number of fronts: - Right to health: Palestinians are prevented from seeking urgent medical and health care in hospitals, which are located in cities only. In addition, the educational process at the school - Right to education: The educational process at school, college, and university level is effectively paralyzed as students and teachers cannot reach their places of learning. - Right to work and earn a living: Palestinians are prevented from working their groves or reaching their places of work. In an area where unemployment is hovering close to 50%, this will lead to more economic suffering of the people. - Ceasing the entry of fuel to Palestinian areas: this measure will effectively bring life to a standstill if it holds for a few more days. With no reserve fuel available, ambulances will not be able to run, transport of goods to remote areas will stop, and public and private transportation will not function at all. The closure has put the lives of the Palestinian population in danger. Also, it is a collective punishment measure imposed by an occupying power in a land and against a people it has illegally occupied. These are clear and flagrant violations of the 4th Geneva Convention, UN Security Council resolutions, international law, and more importantly basic principles of humanity. We call upon all the forces of justice and humanity pressure Israel to lift the siege, and to work towards saving the lives of innocent civilians. In addition, the Palestinian people are in urgent need of international observers and an international force to protect Palestinian civilians from Israeli aggression. Contacts: - President George W.
