The battle for the city, now called Volgograd, "embodies the great history of Russia", Interfax news agency quoted Jiang as saying. He made an entry in Chinese in the visitor's book at the city's memorial to the casualties of the fighting, which translated as "Cherish peace on the planet, build the future together". Deputy Russian Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov said Jiang's visit too the town was a "great mark of respect for Russia", and a fitting end for his "historic" stay in Russia. On Monday, Jiang with Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a treaty of friendship and cooperation between the two countries that was hailed as a key element of a new "strategic partnership". Jiang was due to return to Moscow later in the day and then leave Russia for the city of Minsk in the neighboring state of Belarus. There he will hold talks with President Alexander Lukashenko.
