> Sewage sludge, the solid remains after water from waste processing

> People around the country are now complaining that the application of sludge

And how about all this then?

"Take toxins out of fertilizer

"... After an award-winning series of Seattle Times investigative reports
exposed the practice in 1997, some states took tentative steps toward
tightening their fertilizer laws. But even the most far-reaching
state law - passed here in Washington with fertilizer industry
backing - set standards so loose that most fertilizer companies can
meet them without reducing contamination levels, and in some cases
merely by changing the recommended application rate on their product
labels. No state requires labels to say whether or which toxic wastes
are in a fertilizer bag, much less at what levels."

And so on. What's in it? - 6.2 million pounds of lead compounds, 1.3
million pounds of chromium compounds, 233,000 pounds of cadmium
compounds, 212,000 pounds of nickel compounds, 16,000 pounds of
mercury compounds and 223 pounds of arsenic compounds (dioxins
weren't measured). Healthy crops, eh? See also:

This same completely insane practice (but it makes "sense" for the
good ol' bottom line) has also been reported in Australia.
