HEMP-NETTLE
(Galeopsis tetrahit)

OTHER NAMES: Dog nettle, bee nettle, flowering nettle, wild hemp, ironweed.

ORIGIN: Eurasia

HABITAT: Cultivated fields, open woods, and waste places.

DESCRIPTION: Annual reproducing by seeds.

STEMS: Covered with bristly hairs, 30-76 cm high, swollen at the nodes.

LEAVES: Opposite, 5-10 cm long, coarsely toothed, hairy, long-stalked

FLOWERS: Clustered in the axils of the upper leaves, petals united, white or
pink suffused with purple.

SEEDS: 2.3 mm long, egg-shaped, grayish-brown

CULTURAL CONTROL PRACTICES:
CROP COMPETITION - Hemp-nettle germinates better at high temperatures.
Control of seedlings may be better with early seeded crops because the crop
will be more competitive by the time hemp-nettle germinates.

CULTIVATION - Early spring tillage may encourage germination. Shallow
cultivation of summerfallow is recommended to keep seeds near the surface
and to allow maximum germination.

ROTATIONS - Periodic seeding down to grasses and legumes gives satisfactory
control because forages are harvested before the hemp-nettle sets seed and
any growing plants are destroyed by harvesting operations.

CHEMICAL CONTROL PRACTICES:
Chemical control measures to control this weed can be found in The Guide to
Crop Protection. This publication is issued annually and is available from
Rural Service Centres and the Sustainable Production Branch, Saskatchewan
Agriculture and Food, Regina, Saskatchewan.
