Correct, 0.61.06 is available in Ubuntu gutsy, you could try that, or
ask Ubuntu to make a backport for your version of Ubuntu.

Since you are using Ubuntu, install xchat, connect to the Ubuntu servers
(they use irc.freenode.net) and then join #synfig :)

There are numerous other IRC clients for Ubuntu if you don't like xchat.
