Vertical spacing with colormath?

Hello,

is it true that the option colormath changes vertical spacing
of documents? In particular, I get dramatically increased
vertical space below an equation within an itemize
environment, e.g., something like

\begin{document}
 \begin{itemize}
  \item a
   \begin{equation}%
    \highlightboxed{x = y^2}%
   \end{equation}}
  \item b
 \end{itemize}
\end{document}

produces rather different spacing with vs. without
the option (see attached document).

Is this a bug or just one of my outdated packages?
