DBCP supports the abandoned-pool feature which can be configured to remove objects not returned to the pool after a certain amount of time. See if that helps. If it does, I'd do a thorough search for free- floating connections in your code (no finally clause). BTW, with 150 users in a normal usage pattern I'd expect the connection usage to be around 20 maximum. What do your users do?
