I got mine working. It turned out that my installation ended up somehow confused about the kernel that it had: it had the modules for the latest kernel (2.6.27-4, I think), while the actual kernel was older (2.6.26). I am guessing this had something to do with the fact that I was installing over an old installation and didn't ask for the hdd to be formatted. I ended up deleting all the old system files and doing the installation again. After that it worked.
