My upgrade "seemed" to fail with the same exact warnings that Jeroen
saw...
Errors were encountered while processing:
ubuntu-desktop
Exception during pm.DoInstall(): E:Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error

Traceback (most recent call last):

IOError: [Errno 9] Bad file descriptor
My upgrade process listed ubuntu-desktop plus a few more packages after
"Errors were encountered while processing:"
I hit ok at the scare warning prompt. Then the upgrade process
completed (did not look like it backed out of the upgrade). Before
rebooting I logged out of gnome session and then back in. The new Lucid
login came up - login worked and all of my gnome sessions settings were
retained :-). Looks like the upgrade is ok. I'll reboot now and see
how that goes.
Upgade log files are attached.
