@David, You missed the part where I said I reinstalled the system and now see what the other guys see in their sound preferences? My sound preferences now list Microphone and Line-in as selectable inputs on the stereo analogue device.
I now confirm what #58 is saying. @Gargoulf -> after reinstall I ran Update Manager and it took me to the latest of everything. So to get rid of previous problem with /dev/dsp I reinstalled the system because it was created due to previous fiddeling to get the mic working. My system is now identical to the guys who is working. @Gargoulf, Will try removing all and then post back.
