I tried 3.18-rc1. I got the same result as with rc3 and rc4: a black
screen. But this time, I also noticed a message quickly flashing
(lasting only a second or two): "kvm: disabled by bios".

So far, I tried:

v3.18-rc1-utopic
v3.18-rc2-utopic
v3.18-rc3-vivid
v3.18-rc4-vivid

(I didn't try v3.18-rc2-vivid. Joseph Salisbury directed me to
v3.18-rc2-utopic.)

Please let me know if there are other versions I should try.

(By the way, what I do is install the generic amd64 linux image. For
rc1, I downloaded "linux-
image-3.18.0-031800rc1-generic_3.18.0-031800rc1.201410192135_amd64.deb",
and installed it using Ubuntu Software Centre. That's the procedure I've
been following with the other versions as well.)
