That raises a different problem. Neither port of the system NIC seems to
work in the installer. If I boot into the UEFI menu the system gets an
IP over DHCP just fine but nothing in the installer. If I drop out to a
shell and try to bring the interface up ip addr shows a NO-CARRIER
status.

It's a Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5720 Gigabit Ethernet PCIe that
Ubuntu officially claims works with this specific system
(https://certification.ubuntu.com/hardware/201812-26701) but as far as I
can tell that's wrong or there's been some minor hardware revision
that's causing problems.

Can I re-mount the USB drive I'm installing from as read-write while the
installer is running? I'm not sure how else to get /var/log/installer/*
off the system w/o networking.
