The Edge “I don’t understand the need for yet another troupe, especially when the founding members -in this case Curio Theatre Company co-founders Jared Reed and Paul Kuhn - have achieved critical success as actors on a number of local stages…………… But after seeing Reed’s adaptation of Franz Kafka’s The Trial, now in a maddening production at Curio, I’m starting to see the necessity for at least one new company.” The City Paper “One might question the purpose of adapting novels for the stage……. but the best both honor and illuminate their source. Case in point: Franz Kafka's The Trial, scripted and staged by Jared Reed and Curio Theatre Co.” Curio Theatre opened its fourth season with a world-premiere adaptation of Franz Kafka's 'The Trial' by Jared Reed, October 10 to November 1, 2008. This season is the first to be fully staged in the newly renovated Sanctuary space in the Calvary Church at 4740 Baltimore Avenue In Kafka's seminal work, his protagonist Josef K. wakes up one morning and is arrested and prosecuted for an unspecified crime, never knowing why. From this most simple premise, Kafka spins a nightmare like no other. Six members of Curio Theatre's growing ensemble company portray all the novel's characters in this surreal and maddening tragicomedy which spotlights bureaucracy and paranoia. This timeless piece has resounding political implications in this day and age. Kafka's lead character, K., is a soul adrift in a modern world lacking a moral compass. Curio's strong cast features Newton Buchanon, Liam Castellan, Aetna Gallagher, Josh Hitchens, Jennifer Summerfield, and Kevin Meehan. Performances are 7 p.m., Thursday; 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday Oct.30,31,Nov. 1. Tickets are $10-$22 ($10 tickets for students) with discounts for groups of 10 or more.
