Subject: Re: [UCNeighbors] Church
Hi all,
There is a small dedicated group working to save the church from the
wrecking ball, and they are making progress. At some point (soon)
getting broader community support to halt demolition will be
important. Losing this church without a fight will most certainly
lead to more demolitions of significant structures in the
neighborhood, esp. as developers become more interested in the
area. A few notes about the current condition based on a visit this
week by structural engineers and building professionals-
- most, if not all, of the pews are still in place
- the roof is relatively intact, as is the very beautiful truss
structure supporting the roof
- although there are several holes in the floor where the structure
below has failed, these are selected spots that can be repaired.
Generally, the floor is likewise relatively intact. None of the holes
observed is larger than a foot or two in size.
- most of the stained glass is still present - probably 90% in the
church. (Stained glass in the chapel building appears to have been
removed long ago.)
- The church was in much better shape than the engineer would have
thought.
I'll update the list with additional information on how you can
help, and any updated status on the situation as it's available.
