You forgot one.  Use the appropriate keyboard layout.  It's easy to add
and even switch among different layouts.  Many special characters, such
as the Euro (€), are included in the U.S. International layout.  I just
used it the previous sentence.  You can make the U.S. International
layout your only one or install more than one and use <Ctrl>+<Shift> to
switch.
