Informally I have heard that 1 inch of rain corresponds to anywhere
from 4 inches to 10 inches of snow, depending on "how wet" it is. The
most commonly heard number, in my experience, is 6 inches of snow.
It's late at night now and I'm busy these days gearing up for the new
semester. But if I think of it I will search the NWS pubs for the
"official" conversion factor. Perhaps the Handbook or the ASOS manual
specifies the factor.
