Harold: ironically, the EU has deregulated package sizing, making ‘standard’ sizing harder to find, thus making unit pricing much more essential. And I can assure you it DOES work, even between stores, as, using metric values, the units are essentially the same (usually either per kg or per 100 g for items measured by weight, or per L or mL for fluid items).
For example, as a rough guide, I know that here in the UK cheese usually comes out at around £7/kg (or £0.70/100 g), but can range from £4/kg for a low cost cheese in Aldi to say £12/kg or more for a specialty cheese in Waitrose. With that as a ‘yardstick’, I can make an assessment as to the value of an individual cheese in an individual store using unit pricing. Yes, you can compare the price of brand A to brand B in the same store, but what about the price of the same brand between stores? I would rather see standard product sizes in increments of some rounded metric amount as one would find in a normal metric country. The attorney general of the State of New York is leading this initiative. We all know the major defect of legislation in the State of New York which *requires* units from outside the SI in the denominators of Unit Prices, which preclude value comparisons by little more that easy mental arithmetic. Merchants like this obstacle to value comparisons by consumers! What can Howard Ressel do to correct this defect in the Unit Pricing law in the State of New York? With 110 names on our list, one would think that those 110 people probably live in at least ten or perhaps even twenty or so states. We have state metrication legislation pending in Hawaii (HB36). We have state metrication legislation pending in Oregon (LC44). Please consider introducing state metrication legislation in your state too so we can give momentum to this trend. I know that some may argue against this state-by-state strategy, and I agree that a federal mandate would be preferable, but a federal mandate seems unlikely in light of the current gridlock in Congress. Even though a state-by-state metrication legislation strategy may not be ideal, at least it sends a message that some Americans in some states want metrication. Who knows? It just might work. I say we give it a try. What say you? Please consider introducing metrication legislation in YOUR state. ----- Message from "Ressel, Howard R (DOT)" <howard.res...@dot.ny.gov> --------- Date: Mon, 16 Jun 2014 13:18:35 +0000 From: "Ressel, Howard R (DOT)" <howard.res...@dot.ny.gov> Reply-To: howard.res...@dot.ny.gov Subject: [USMA:53982] Re: Rejoining USMA To: "U.S. Metric Association" <usma@colostate.edu> Probably a good time to thank Don for coordinating this list for all these years, I think we sometimes forget he is the quite guy keeping it going and thanks to Colorado State for hosting.
