I understand that the Tekonsha Prodigy or the Hayes Lemmerz with
remote are generally preferred by members of the VACList but I am
wondering if anyone can share their experience with the Tekonsha
Voyager and/or Envoy on a small trailer. Thanks.

Hi Tuna,

We are located in Colorado Springs, CO. Wow! Sounds like we've got our work
cut out for us, eh? Had no idea about the suspension, but am hoping that
once we get down into the flooring that we find not much needs to be
replaced (crossing my fingers!). The trailer had been used as a hunting
trailer for many years (can also be judged be the kerosene lamps through out
the trailer), and then bought by a woman in Pueblo who then had it just sit
on her property. In '97 the heater I suppose exploded and the fire
extinquished itself, but not before causing damamge to the wall that was
supporting it, as well as the closets and upper cabinets above the sink (the
heater was placed dangerously close to the fold out couch they had added -
we will probably just take it out all together). All of that will need
replacing, but we were happy to find that the charcoal ceiling near where
the heater is (was) comes clean with 409 and/or oven cleaner (I've heard
natures orange works wonders as well).

This has been our American dream for a long time, and although it will be an
on going and long process, I keep thinking of the results and that keeps us
going (gosh, and we've only put about 6 hours into it so far!)

Have no pictures yet, but will post as soon as I get my film developed in my
camera (took many before and after sweeping/cleaning pics).

Take care! And I'd love to see your '48 Trailwind if you by chance had any
pictures to post :)

Best regards,
Liz

Hi Dick,

The dealers up here, at least 4 I've talked to said the prodigy was a
overkill and the voyager is more than adequate. They have been installing
them for years with no trouble. ps up here is in B.C. Canada.

We've used the Voyager for 2 seasons now, towing our 17' Caravel all
over the western US. It has performed flawlessly with that size
trailer, and looks like it will do fine with our 22' Flying Cloud, too.
The pendulum mech doesn't need to be level, and the initial adjustment
using the indicator LED is a piece of cake.
Best of luck,
RJ

Subject: [VACList] Bathroom Re-install

I'm getting ready to re-install my repainted bathroom parts for my '69
Overlander, but I have a problem. The molded cabinet/shelf unit (with the
sliding doors) that attaches to the tub on the street side seems to be about
1/2 inch shorter than when I took it out. (What can I say?)

When I line up the old rivet holes on the tub with that unit, the holes that
line up on the top to attach to the ABS inner lining have about the space of a
1x2 (sideways). Nothing on the floor was removed except the carpet (replaced
w/vinyl) and the "box" under the tub is original.

Does anyone have a picture they can e-mail to me of how this part is connected?
I haven't been able to find one with this detail.

Thanks so much in advance....you guys are great.

Dick,
The Prodigy is far better than the Voyager. I've had both, and wouldn't
consider the latter under any circumstances. It isn't like the price
difference is hundreds of dollars, either. Your safety and peace of mind is
worth the small difference.

Subject: Re: [VACList] Tekonsha Voyager

Greetings Dick!

I have the Tekonsha Voyager in my '99 Suburban mainly because my Airstream
dealer only handles Tekonsha products in the brake controller line. It is
perfectly adequate, and I really don't have a single complaint with the
unit. I do miss the convenience of the remote control that I have with the
Hayes-Lemmerz Micro Control HD-Plus that is in my Cadillac and the earlier
version of the same controller that I have in my '65 Dodge.

For the difference in cost (about $40.00), I would choose the Hayes Lemmerz
with remote control if the mounting point for the controller were the least
bit inconvenient. In my Suburban, it is fairly easy to reach the Tekonsha
Voyager so it hasn't been a problem; however, in my Cadillac and Dodge the
mounting point is so low on the dash as to preculde a quick easy reach in an
emergency. After experiencing an emergency with my '82 Pontiac Bonneville
while towing an '18 foot Nomad with an inconvenient controller location, I
have insisted upon either a remote control or a controller that can be
located inconspicuously on the dash.

I believe that Bud Cooper, the founder of the VAC owns a '48 Liner. While
much of the trailer is not original, he may be able to give you some insight
as to what was there. I don't think that he is on this list. You can contact

Well Twinkie People, It's official. The Worners will be opening a
courtesy parking site in Sedan, NM within the next 2 years. Closing (by
mail) was completed today and we are now deeper in hock. (Spending
money like we've got it is the main reason we don't.)

Looking forward to opening a Southwest branch of the Airstream Rescue
Foundation in that 4500 square foot barn.

See photos and realtor brochure at:

in the NM Homestead folder.

Don't pack just yet, but eventually Y'ALL COME!

Hi Matt,
Nice photos on your home page. Your homestead looks beautiful and
isolated. I have a brother in law in NE New Mexico. He has a ranch in
Clayton. I don't know how far that is from Sedan but I thought I'd just
toss it out. He's a judge and a 60's hippie leftover. Great combo.

Bob,

Clayton is about 20 minutes north of the house. It sports the one traffic light
I know of in Union County. There may be more, but I only encountered the one in
my trip.

Will keep you posted as to when we're settled in.

I agree with you, Jim. My Prodigy unit, once installed and setup, needed no

There has been a lot of interest lately on the Prodigy and Voyager and just
thought I would offer anybody needing either at lower price then any
retailer. I get them through my business. The Voyager is adequate for most
applications and the trailer weight is not really the issue but rather the
way they work Both use inertia activated proportional technology but the
Prodigy is the only one that has "Smart control" which is the same features
in reverse to prevent that jerking while backing. It also has a quick
disconnect for storage and theft protection and automatic level adjustment
for varying terrain. If you are looking for a Voyager, don't buy the XP
model unless you have three or four axles as that is the difference between
the standard Voyager and the XP. Contact me off list if you are interested
in either.

I've had the Tekonsha Sentinel and the Voyager; both were
basically ok, but the Sentinel was easier to adjust. The Voyager, which
was already installed on my current Suburban, seemed to need adjustment
fairly often, but that was never a real problem. I did not like the
braking action, which seemed to me to be either too much or too little,
seldom exactly what I wanted.
I replaced the Voyager with a Jordan Research Ultima 2020
(actually, before Tekonsha came out with the Prodigy), which I still have;
it is very nice and give great, proportional, braking. My only
reservation is that one cannot replace the cable - you have to get a whole
new unit. If something happened to the cable, I'd feel better if I could
just replace it; I would carry a spare if that was possible. Outside of
that, I'm very satisfied with the Jordan.
