For your application, load range D is most likely necessary. My experience is that the tires must be about 28 inches in diameter. I have a new set of Carlisle 700-15 bias ply that should be a replacement for the original. However, they are > 29 inches in diameter and hit the rear of the wheel well. Front and middle clearance are OK. Also, be sure of the manufacture date if you buy new tires. They should be within a few months of manufacture to be acceptable. I think the first two numbers are the week of manufacture and the last number is the decade. Anyone out there who could use the Carlisle tires, let me know off list. BTW, I'll be using the 235 load range D for my '69 Safari single axle. But in most cases these old trailers set have set abandoned or have changed hands many times subject to neglect and abuse. When I found my 1976 Sovereign a few years ago, it looked as if it had been setting up for about 10 years. The person I bought it from claimed to be a family member but I believe he just picked the trailer up to sell it. As I was cleaning the trailer when I first brought it home I found stuck in a trash bag under the sink the orginal owners manual, and several rally stickers that the orginal owners had collected during the first 8 years they had the trailer. There was also a few items from the second owners that filled in a couple of more years but no history from about 1987 until I bought the trailer in 1999. I am just glad that this info was not discarded. Good luck. - ----- Original Message ----- From: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Tuesday, January 28, 2003 4:19 PM Subject: [VACList] past owners of airstreams > > > does anyone know if the past owners of an ventage airstream can be found just > to know where the airstream has been > > jerry > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > When replying to a message, please delete all unnecessary original text > > To unsubscribe or change to an digest format, please go to > http://airstream.net/vaclist/listoffice.html > ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 16:16:44 -0700 From: "Kenneth E. Then you can look in old directories and see who owned that trailer with that number. Understand that anyone can pick up an old number, so the further back you look in a directory, the better chance you will have. He noted that although the system improves manuverability significantly, it is absolutely great for pulling a trailer. "Like putting steering wheels on the front of the trailer." You see, with the four wheel steering on the highway, in tow mode, all four wheels of the tow vehicle go in the direction of the turn. Thus the trailer sees the two vehicle as going "sideways" in the direction of the turn, which means that the pivoting of the trailer at the hitchpoint is virtually eliminated. In this way, the tow vehicle does not introduce any sway forces at the hitch typically caused by the tow vehicle heading in a direction (angle) different from that of the trailer. The Delphi engineer noted that the stability of the entire rig is improved dramatically. Some members that are packrats may have some directories. I have a couple from about 93/94 somewhere here in one of the piles. Gerald J. - -- Entire content copyright Dr. Gerald N. Depending upon where you live and/or where your Airstream was last registered, it may be possible to have the DMV perform a title search to determine ownership history. There is usually a fee involved, and sometimes this service is only available to licensed dealers or through a third party (Currency Exchanges in Illinois). I took advantage of this service in Illinois to trace the ownership of my '65 Dodge and was able to trace it back to when it was first brought into Illinois in 1968 by its original owner who was from the St. Louis area. I didn't have to do this with my Airstream or Argosy as I knew the owners who originally ordered the trailers new. Good luck with your search! Kevin Kevin D. Just a note of interest regarding transporting an Airstream. We recently had a 2000 34' with slide out moved from Michigan to California. I called the Airstream factory and asked who was doing any hauling of new ones from them to dealers. I was given the number for KBT Trucking in Ohio. Cost as I remember was $.87 per mile. They are insured to cover the trailer while in transit. Trailer was picked up in Mich on Sat and was delivered to us in North Hollywood on Tues. Based on the service they provided I would recommend them. Here is a link to their contact information http://www.kbt.cc/index2.htm I have no connection with this company and can only comment on our experience with them.
