Greetings John!

The differences between your '63 Overlander and the '77 Argosy won't be
terribly great so far as operational and utility systems are concerned, and
the typical concerns about structural and floor integrity remain the same.

Some differences that you will encounter include the wrap around wing
windows in the front of the coach - - these can be quite costly to replace
if damaged or broken - - and a new front window rock guard can cost in
excess of $500 if the coach isn't so equipped. Unlike the '63, you will
find that all windows have tempered safety glass, and if my understanding is
correct some may be thermopane as was found in similar model year
Airstreams. As with similar model year Airstreams, the tambour cabinet
doors may be a concern - - they can be reproduced, but the tambour material
isn't cheap at something in the neighborhood of $350 for a 4' x 8' sheet - -
the guides and tracks for the tambour (should they need replacement) can
also become expensive at something in the neighborhood of $20 to $30 per
opening. Another item that can be troublesome is the main door lock - - if
it has been maintained and cared for, it shouldn't pose too great a problem,
but if the door has been frequently slammed or the lock mistreated it can be
expensive to replace/repair - - it seems that the interior handle is a
rather frequent problem point (the one on my '78 Minuet is gradually
disintegrating).

So far as the exterior is concerned, the galvanized end caps can be a
problem to keep protected with paint. It seems that the paint often fails
from the edges in (resulting from contact between dissimilar metals?) - -
not necessarily difficult to remedy, but something that must be maintained.
The chassis is basic Airstream all of the way, so there is also the concern
about the condition of the DuraTorque axles as would be the case with a
similar Airstream.

Basically, I have really enjoyed the differences between my '64 Overlander
and the '78 Argosy. Each trailer has its own unique personality, and I am
looking forward to getting even better acquainted with my Argosy.

You wouldn't happen to be looking at one of the rare 1977 24' Minuets with
tandem axles?

Good luck with your inspection!

Kevin

I have a '75 Argosy 26. Argosys were made by airstream and except for the
paint, and the end caps, which are either steel or fiberglass, depending
(I'm not sure on what, but most are steel and mine are glass), they are
virtually identical to silver airstreams. They were a lower-priced model and
tend not to have options such as vista-view windows (tho I have seem some
argosy'\s with them), etc. Otherwise same design, construction, quality,
systems. Love mine. Plus, you don't have to polish!

Forgot to add: Things to look for are the same as on an airstream: floor
rot, seam seals, etc.

Hello,
I saw aluminum tanks in the switch and run propane display at the local
gas station! The price was like $14.50 for a trade and $49 for no trade.
I have not had time to look them over real close yet but it's on my
weekend agenda. If these are truly aluminum I can't believe I have saved
these old tanks from the gas grills I have purchased over the years
(Webber & charcoal is the preferred method to burn my streaks!)but now I
know how to get new tanks for my 59.

After we purchased ours from AirstreamDreams.com (we are very happy
with them) we found another distributor that was a bit less
  expensive:

  Emerald Isle Distribution Inc
  6999 Huntley Rd # M,Columbus,OH 43229
  Phone: (614) 888-2788

You may want to see how they compare now.

Subject: [VACList] Avion by Fleetwood

Hello all: I have driven past a trailer down the street from my home for the
past 15 years. It is a 1983 Avion by Fleetwood. I finally decided to stop
by and ask about it. It was purchased in California, driven here to Utah and
parked after the owner died of a sudden heart attack. It has sat for 17 or
18 years. The current owner is willing to sell but does not know a fair
price. It has "9.1 Meters" on the outside which I believe equates to 27.8
feet. The owner states that they had to have all the locks changed recently
because they were corroded. It is a tandem axle with twin propane tanks in
front. It has an electric jack. The outside skin is all aluminum and it has
a awning that looks in good shape. I could not get inside (she could not
find the right key) but she says it has a queen bed and two twin beds. The
tire treads look fine but the tires probably need replacing because of
sitting so long. Assuming that all appliances work and plumbing is sound,
what might be a fair price and is this model worth looking at. Any opinions
are appreciated.

Tom,

A list member who's URL is posted above has a very similar trailer for sale
unless he sold it already. Jim Dunmyer would be an excellent source for you
to ask about what a fair price would be for the Avion you have in your area.

Way back in the late 80's we looked at and almost bought a brand new 34'
Avion by Fleetwood. The price was about $30k or more but it sure was a
beautiful trailer. That was when we bought our first Airstream, a 1969 29'
Intl Ambassador for a mere $4k. We put another $4-5k into it and had a very
nice Airstream then. ;) Our second Airstream recently followed us home,
it's a 1995 34' Classic Excella FK model and we dearly love this one, too!

For what it's worth Jim was asking just $8200.00 for his Avion.

Fleetwood no longer builds aluminum Avion travel trailers. I think they
stopped and switched to fiberglass in the early 90's.
