OK. Further explanation may be necessary to gravitate away from the
facitious. Many vintage Airstreams do not have an acceptable VIN number or
plate. The DMV here in Carlsbad will not accept the Airstream plate near
the door. The average wait to find this out is well over an hour . . . not
to mention the inconvenience of towing the unit to DMV.

AAA reps accepted the Airstream ID plate because it matched the "VIN" on the
registration papers. DMV would not accept the non standard VIN. Those who
choose to subject themselves to the vagaries of the California DMV offices
when a simpler path is available . . . can make that choice.

If you can't go to the AAA [ by far the better way], California DMV will
require a "rubbing" of the VIN number.

As Bob pointed out, you cannot get a legible "rubbing" off the Airstream ID
plate.

However, there is a way to beat the system.

As follows:

Recreate the VIN number using a Dymo labeler. Then make a rubbing of this
raised number by placing a sheet of plain paper over it and rubbing with the
side of and old fashioned wood pencil.

The reason for the rubbing is because the DMV had too many ID numbers which
were misread, and hence in error. If you want to be completely honest, you
can stick the Dymo label to your Airstream and then make the rubbing. That
way you can say with a straight face that you took the number off your
trailer!

The Automobile Club's rep is trustwothy, hence the DMV will accept their
visual reading of the VIN number. However, the Auto Club will insist that
you bring the trailer to their office (parking lot) so their representative
can verify the number.

Good luck,

Oliver Filippi

This refers to the 63 brochure.

I took a magnifing glass and looked at the original brochure. On the
Bambi and the Globetrotter pictures the tonque jack is down but the
jack has been "painted" out. All you see is a slight outline of the jack
and wheel. On the Trade Wind the jack is down but is hidden by the
Indian except for a slice of the wheel. The Overlander is down but is in
the dark shadow. The equalizer bars show only on the Overlander and the
Tradewind and sem to be hooked up.

Q) Can anyone recommend a source of marine plywood? The
source should preferably be as close to Columbia, SC
to reduce shipping costs.

A) You can see if Home Depot will order it for you. The one here will but you pay in
advance. Also look around for ACX. It has a smooth side and rough side

Also, I have been told that the bathroom furniture on
my 68 can be gelcoated. Has anyone actually done this
successfully? If so, any recommendations on who/where
to buy materials from?

I have been told you can gel coat them too but I've also been told that the bathroom
fixtures (sink/tub) are plastic. Gel coat works great on fiberglass as I have sprayed
it on several Vette's and boats, also sprayed the tub in my rental house and it's
great stuff. As for a supplier you can get it from a marine supply store and some auto
body supply shops.

We can attest to the difficulty of dealing with the CA DMV. We bought out
Globetrotter from Dan at Vintage Campers in Indiana and had it towed here (to
Riverside) by Rick Davis. I called the DMV to determine how we register it
and found that it involved taking paperwork to the DMV (get an appointment,
wait in line anyway, deal with red tape, etc. ) to get a temporary
registration so that we could take it on the road to the DMV to show them the
VIN number. We had never towed anything in our lives. But we hooked up the
Suburban and made our way 3 miles to the DMV office terrified that we'd hit
someone, nervous about every rattle and bump we'd heard (we pulled over
twice) and anxious that we'd really gotten in over our heads with
insufficient preparation.

We made it to the parking lot and sprawled it across several spaces grateful
to have made it alive and without damage. A guy pulls up in his truck -
blocks our path, jumps out and says "wow, these are really cool, ya wanna
sell it to me?" Needless to say, we didn't sell but did give him a tour and
pointed him to some websites to check.

Next I went inside, stood in line again, and was assured that someone would
be out soon to check the number if we pulled around to the other side of the
building. Naturally, we were pointed in the wrong direction and had to pull
into an alley, scraping the bumper in the process to find an open field to
turn around in, to get back into the alley, to get back to the DMV parking
lot, scraping the bumper again (it was a really deep gutter) and around the
proper side of the building pointing in the prescribed direction. Then we
waited for another 45 minutes. I went back inside, waited in line again, to
find out that "oh, didn't the person come out? oh, well, we'll see where she
is". Twenty minutes later that woman comes out to look at the VIN, BUT WAIT,
the registration from Ohio and the sales reciept from Indiana show a VIN of
D21D9J195 (starts with D as in Dog). The plate next to the door looks more
like an O as in octopus, but it's hard to tell, could go either way. Hmmmm,
gotta find a supervisor. The supervisor has to call his supervisor. Much
discussion ensues. Massive amounts of paperwork are generated. Three and a
half hours after we left home, we finally had our paperwork and could go home
to back the trailer into our yard for the first time. This took a long time
and much stress. We must have lost 5 lbs. each that day just from sweat (and
it was February).

If only we had thought of the AAA.

A friend of mine, has a 1973 27'. As most of you know, Airstream
started using a "wood look" made from plastic type material. She
very much wants to get rid of that look either by painting,
covering, etc... Has anyone done this to their Airstream? If
so, how?? What do you recommend.

And yes, I have told them, they can join the WBCCI free the first
year, showing new ownership. I was hoping to get them to their
first rally in April, but the can not go.

Paul,
Have you told them how good it looks original and offered any reason to
leave it that way??? Kidding, but being I'm a semi-purist (emphasis semi),
the horror stories are plentiful unless it's a complete custom job that
overrides the deflation of what is possibly about to happen. If they are
sure they want to change it, the options are unlimited but people have been
turned off more often then not because previous owners have had "Visions".
Maybe you can convince them of how cool daisy wallpaper really is, and that
dark walnut or hickory is coming back! I'll give you (them) that the gold
and green upholstery probably needs to go because it's likely moldy and
stinks but painting the fake wood cabinets will look worse then it maybe
does now. New curtains would be awesome and might make those cabinets look
better too. Just a thought.

I've looked through the scanned brochure and agree with that evaluation.
The hitch is practically inside the bumper of the Falcon, too close for
decent turning, but I think there's no hitch.

I second Randy's observations - unless they can do an entire custom
replacement, as some on the list have*, the horror stories of trying to
"spruce up" the vinyl cabinets are well documented in the archives. New
soft goods will go a great way to brighten and update the interior.
