The last time a battle of this magnitude took place, it was the Wright brothers and all the slimy weasels like Curtiss who were trying to steal their IP. It went on for a long time with no end in sight until the guvmint stepped in for the sake of the war effort in Europe, so we could make airplanes. I don't see those dynamics in play any more, what with the advent of nuclear weapons. There hasn't been an existential war for America since 1945, which ended coincidentally, with nuclear weapons.
