When I looked at Mailchimp, it seemed that the reporting service was the one
thing not included in the free version. Free is good! I’ll check again.
Thanks,
Patsy

If you are using the free Mailchimp there is no fee for the reports that
indicate who opens and the the bounces.

Our branch uses Constant Contact and I use it for several clients. I love
it, but it, maybe all, non-pdf newsletters have some AAUW-related cons,
mostly due to computer resistance. These are the complaints I hear from
members.

The cons:

   - antiquated computers and some dial-up lines --
   - want to print it to read in bed; can't figure out how to print it
   - harder to teach other branch leadership to share the burden of
   publishing
   - Members don't update their email addresses
   - About a third of membership don't use email or rarely check it

The pro's

   - Multiple lists; no duplicates sent
   - colorful, attractive
   - They worry about the spam laws, etc.

We use it for monthly enewsletters, updates between meetings, special
interest groups, fundraising, special events, etc.

The help features, both text and video, are excellent. On rare occasion
something weird happens and I call the phone support folks. I find them to
be excellent.
Good luck.

AAUWMO just maintains a private email list and sends to around 600
individual members as an attachment. We still postally mail about 225. We
don;t
track or anything, but evidently most folks receive it just fine. "
Bouncees" (just a few, thankfully) are contacted personally to update their
email
addresses.--Joyce

Patsy...I send out an electronic newsletter 1/month - 1/2 months; it is
sent out to all members who have supplied an email address to AAUW/Washington;
anyone receiving the electronic newsletter can easily "unsubscribe" via
Constant Contact who then in turn notifies me; I find Constant Contact very
easy to use and extremely helpful and friendly technical assistance. They
designed our masthead using our website homepage design; anytime I have a que
stion I get a live person who walks me through the process and I am
extremely satisfied with them.

We have had very good luck with Vertical Response. We had been given several
suggestions when we started emailing the state newsletter, but chose them
because they offered a "per mailing" rate. Since we only send the FOCUS four
times per year, a monthly service didn't make sense for us. Of course, things
can always change but so far so good. And yes, I can track "clicks" on links,
number of messages opened, number bounced, number unsubscribed, etc.

If you are using the free Mailchimp there is no fee for the reports that
indicate who opens and the the bounces.

We use Constant Contact...we have apprx 3,000 addresses in our system and
it costs us less than $400 per year (I think it's $400) and we can send any
number of "issues" per year...doesn't cost any more for tracking. I HIGHLY
 recommend it.

Regarding AAUW of Michigan, do all of your members receive E-News? Is that
something you send on a regular basis? Or do you use it just for special
messages like email blasts? Do you find Constant Contact easy to use?
Thanks,

Patsy -
I believe you are touching on the real issue. The hard part is not how to
communicate with our members electronically (there are many choices) -
but rather how do we maintain communication with those that have not
embraced email.
For Colorado, we have set up a Yahoo Group for electronically distributing
our State Bulletin and our Public Policy Call-to-Actions. It works for
those who get signed up properly, but applying to the group has not been
too user-friendly.

>From the State perspective, we have determined that our branches have
refined the process with their members- most branches send their
newsletters electronically. Up until a month ago, we sent all our members
in the state a mailed hard copy. Now, going forward, we are forwarding
the state newsletter to the branch presidents and they now have the
responsibility to distribute to their members. If the member gets their
newsletter by email, they will get the State newsletter by email. If they
get the branch newsletter snail-mail, the branch will mail the state
newsletter, and invoice the state for those few mailings. It is not a
complete reduction of printing and postage costs, but it beats the costs
for 1120 copies. We expect a significant savings to the State Budget.

Brenda Wolfe

Went to email for the branch newsletter some time ago, originally
charged $1 additional dues if they wanted snail mail, but have
discontinued that.

We still have about 7 branch members without computers, and one member
who has a very slow dial up who requested a print version.

Coincidentally, just learned that RCI (timeshare company) charges a
higher fee to members who use the call center than to those who do their
bookings online. So it is not just snail mail.

Joyce,
Do you send the 600 out in several emails, or all at once? Currently we need
to send less than that via email, but were concerned about sending that many in
a private list.

AAUWMO just maintains a private email list and sends to around 600 individual
members as an attachment. We still postally mail about 225. We don;t track or
anything, but evidently most folks receive it just fine. " Bouncees" (just a
few, thankfully) are contacted personally to update their email
addresses.--Joyce

Subject: Re: email services for state newsletter

AAUW NC just started using MailChimp and we are very pleased.

They provide the code to show archives of the
newsletters -- see http://aauwnc.org/news for the
links to the two issues we've published.

Today's e-newsletter has a link to the
Fall/Winter Tar Heel News (published as a PDF a
few days ago and at the printers for US mail
delivery to all users soon). There's an article
on page 4 about the launch of the enewsletter in
August. We were conservative in reading the
MailChimp terms of service and required an opt-in
for the subscription to the e-newsletter - we
started with data from AAUW on 1324 branch and
"national" members in NC. There were many bad
email addresses, many people who ignored our
message to subscribe, and although our open rates
are very good, many ignore the e-newsletter, too.
Bottom line is that for the message that went out
today, we've had 14 people click on the link to
the Tar Heel News we posted -- so I don't feel
bad that we're spending money to USMail it to
more than 900 folks. [That, of course, begs the
question of how many of *those* copies will be
recycled without being read, but still.. Has
*anyone* had good experience with a readership survey for their newsletter??]

MailChimp has a "post by email" feature -- each
list has a "secret address" and mail to that
address (can be nicely formatted Word doc, for
instance, or just a quick -- "this is important,
call your legislator") automagically becomes a
draft email campaign. We haven't tried that, but
it looks very useful to spread the effort of composing the messages.

I also use ConstantContact for a client, and the
"build the newsletter" features are quite similar
-- but you just can't beat the price for MailChimp.

-Nancy
