I don't really think comparing to an unreleased product can be called a trend!
(If I read the press correctly MS is changing some UI decisions.)
I am prepared to write one and may well start soon but I wasn't sure how stable
the interface was. Personally I would expect it to be part of the core of WiX
but I know from previous experience that getting code accepted is not easy.
(The reason for making it part of WiX is that I work in an environment where,
rather disappointingly, open source is considered evil and just getting WiX
approved was an uphill struggle.)
I do agree that the core of WiX is more important than the UI and was just
testing the water to see whether I was alone on the UI choice - maybe I would
repost something in wix-users to test the water.

I still feel this is complicated and only hope it is not the model installers

Maybe.<g> Remember, AppX packages install in Windows 8 with no UI at all, so
there's a trend.
I am disappointed that the old WiX UIs won't be present
How disappointed?
(1) Disappointed enough to write your own and share it?
(2) How much would you pay for one?
If your answers are anything along the line of "no and US$0 because the WiX
team should provide everything for free because the low level of respect and
gratitude should be enough for them to do everything for me," then prepare to
be laughed at.<g>
The Burn architecture means that the WiX team doesn't have to be the only ones
who can add customizable UIs. A simple interface to the Burn engine is the only
tie to WiX. You can do one for yourself and anyone can open-source or sell one
of their own.
Writing a BA that supports all WixUI features/dialog sets/customizability is a
significant effort. It's beyond what the small WiX team could take on for WiX
v3.6. (If the engine sucks, there's no need for BAs.) And to be honest,
everyone's better off if more than just the WiX core team contributes (even for
sale).
