It would be great to root cause this. As the one that designed and wrote the 
initial feature, I can't imagine why this would happen (someone brought up the 
possibility of a 32/64-bit view mapping issue - which given it was first in XP 
could be likely) and the only way to work around it is to implement my original 
idea of merging 32- and 64-bit views (while supporting the current key) 
programmatically, but then you start running into race conditions (which is why 
I went with the key I did after talking to some key Windows folks).
 
If this doesn't repro on Vista+ and it only happens in this case, I'm wondering 
how strongly you feel about taking it given XP's lifecycle (though I agree it 
will be in practical use for sometime to come). At the very least, root-causing 
it (perhaps with procmon) might help to better understand any potential 
workarounds since avoiding compat issues should be key here.
