It's impossible for me to believe. It's a very common card and I have
a co-worker using one on a 4.2.1 system today. It is declared as
"Driver ati" in the Device section.

A bit more information might well help. How did you create your
XF86Config file? What is in it? What do you see in the log file when
it fails?
