I've installed Gentoo Linux 1.4_rc4 on my Pentium III machine. (includes glibc-2.3.2 and xfree86-4.3.0) Also part of my machine is the graphic card 'Diamond Fire GL2'. But I didn't find a driver for this card and my glibc-version on http://www.ati.com/support/products/workstation/firegl2/linux/firegl2linuxdrivers.html (The driver for glibc-2.2 didn't work)
I don't think the problem is your glibc version. Last time I checked, the FireGL 2/3/4 driver from ATI only supported XFree86 4.2. If you want to continue to use that card, you'll have to either get ATI to update the driver or revert back to XFree86 4.2.
