The same applies when I have both the '.fdi' file present and the ButtonMapping option in 'xorg.conf'. It does seem to be possible to map these buttons, since as Thomas suggested, I am able to bind them to the desired effect using 'xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 9 3 4 5 6 7 8 2"', but I feel this should be properly done in 'xorg.conf' and the xmodmap way feels kind of dirty to me.
