I actually have a problem that is similar. I use the 'download all' API to make the mind maps, and every time the maps from people writing not in western language would come up full of question marks and similar.
I did not know if it was my computer (and the map was actually readable from somwhere else), my code or your API. I egoistically decided to ignore the problem until someone would come to protest (at which time I also would have had someone on which to test the new code), but now I suspect the problem might not have been of my code. So, if someone with international characters would like to test their map on the map maker, and give me feedback on how it looks like on their computer, I would be grateful.
