Volume Manager should be off before creating pools in removable disks.
Probably it will work to edit /etc/vold.conf and comment out the line
use rmdisk drive /dev/rdsk/c*s2 dev_rmdisk.so rmdisk%d
Then do
kill -HUP `pgrep vold`
Otherwise cdroms and other valuable devices won't be mounted.
