Terminology nit: The log device is a SLOG. Every ZFS dataset has a ZIL. Where the ZIL writes (slog or main pool devices) go for a given dataset are determined by a combination of things including (but not limited to) the presence of a SLOG device, the logbias property and the size of the data.
