Hi, Geoffrey.

If you only want to read the files and maybe execute the software on these disks, the 6100 should be able to do it without problem. If you find trouble reading the disks with the 6100, either the 6100's floppy drive is broken or -more probably- the disks are damaged. In both cases, the fellows on this list may be of help.

If what you want is to actually execute System 6, you will need a pre-1990 Macintosh. The latest model that could run System 6 was the Classic I (well, the Classic II can run an special version of system 6.0.8, but you have to get it because AFAIK it is not the standard one published on Apple's site). A Plus, SE or SE/30, or any Mac II will also do the trick. The 512ke can also run System 6, but you may find that 512 Kb just isn't enough for that System - it takes more than 300 Kb of RAM on startup and leaves very little space for applications. The original 512k (the one with the stock 64 Kb ROMs) is completely unable to go beyond System 4.2.

If you plan to use a compact Mac (512ke, Plus, SE, SE/30, Classic I/II...) you may want to join LEM's Compact Macs list (http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/compact.shtml). On the other hand, if you plan to use a Mac II, the Vintage Macs list (http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/vintagemacs.shtml) is your friend :-) . In any case, System6 list (http://www.lowendmac.com/lists/system6.html) will be usefull.

I need to check through some old old disks that created on a 512 Mac, if I remember right system 6 was the highest you could go and I used that 512 till 1995 when I went Power Mac!!! 6100

So I have some powerbook 5300's and some 190s. Will these allow me to search endless disks for 1 name or do I have to get something older to run the system 6 disks or even 4 or 5. Which Mac would be the fastest and best to search back to roughly 1988 1989\
Any help appreciated
Geoff
