I'm late to the thread, but have you tried Disk Warrior? Some versions have a recover mode. If you try to re-build the directory and the button for re-place is grayed out, hit the preview button and it will take you into a mode that gives you a chance to save "rescued items," but you'll have to have a disk attached to save them to. -- All the Best,
