This fix, plus the change in FreeType 2.8 that makes light hinting the new normal for regular LCD displays, trigger a bunch of good things in text rendering on Linux. [1] Fonts really don't get any better than that right now — on any platform — so thank you.
The irony is, just as Linux gets state-of-the-art native font hinting and subpixel anti-aliasing, Apple decides none of it is worth the complexity anymore and simply removes it! [2]
