***in reference to your last sentence especially--absolutely!
it's apalling (and i've mentioned this before) that a commercial radio
station here in halifax that gets played at work does a top 9 at 9
five days a week and doesn't announce *any* of the songs in the top
9 at 9 so that they can ask you to call the next day and list the top 9
(which you would only know if you listened to the station often enough
to know the songs in the first place!) in other words, if i were to hear
a song in the top 9 that i liked and i wanted to buy the album from that
artist, i'd have no way of finding out what it was, even if i listened to
the top 9 at 9 five days a week. and it's all in
the name of promotion, like you said, and these promotions that are
tied into the top 9 at 9 all make big $ for the station. so your song could
be #1 on the top 9 at 9 all week but you'd never hear an announcer
say what your track was (which, as sean mentioned, would be simply
infuriating, understandably, to the artist and label involved) because the
station is about the $ and not about the music (despite what they might say).
it's a sad fact that if commercial
stations could play nothing but ads and get away with it, many would.
