First of all, I would dispute the claim that the function of radio is to
promote. This may be true for commercial radio, but for non-commercial and
even internet radio the primary function is to educate. This is even true
for specialty shows on commercial stations (i.e. where the dj's actually
have control over what they play). Back announcing and providing info about
the artist/song played is vital to radio being educational. But it's
equally important to let listeners know where they can actually purchase the
music they hear on your show.
Anyway, I can't really disagree with any of the cds on Ian's list.
But here are a few more that I think should be considered:
