Finally,
I saw the commercial spot last night on VH1 and checked the Ford Motor
company site today (www.ford.com) checking for two things: a Quicktime video
of the commercial (most companies will have this on their pages after airing
a new broadcast advert) and some kind of acknowledgement of the track being
used (like VW did with Nick Drake's "Pink Moon"). I found neither.
While I thought the tv spot was good and the music editing was very good, I
was really disappointed not to see anything about either the music or the ad
on Ford's website...did anyone else check their website for these things?
On the Focus 247 page there is a catagory for music (it's kind of a
"lifestyle" section to go with the car). What's on it? Friggin' Garth
Brooks!
Obviously, the commercial doesn't signal a huge revolutionary change in
direction for Ford. It's a tv spot that will air for a while then disappear
quietly. That's it...then it's back to trainspotting and next gigs here on
313. So I don't think we should get our undies in a bunch and wonder if this
means the end of good techno and the corporate mind control machine taking
over.
For the time we should be happy that Mr. Atkins is gettin' some green.

I also saw this commercial last night and the subsequent list discussion
today.
It seems to me that Ford was saying two things...
An acknowledgement of the forward thinking and innovative aspect related to
Detroit Techno - the music
AND
Ford's own attempt to impress that they're trying to innovate with their
offerings (in particular the Focus) with their own
Detroit Techno(logy) within the automotive realm.
The music isn't doesn't have sole possession of the term Detroit
Techno(logy)
seeing as cars have been built there for the longest time..
think of it this way too.. Before the electronics and computer companies
of Silicon Valley identified that region as a "technological" center in the
US
Detroit with its automotive industry was able to say that long before
this current age....
I think they were giving props to both the music and their own
products... in some way...
I guess I think too much, and hope for the best..
P.S. - I agree with glyph's statement wholeheartedly too..
