I may be a bit off here, but I believe that the arguments are different than you have stated.

I think the argument is between those that think that the involvement of Detroit techno in "corporate" business - i.e. commercials - is detrimental to the "cause" behind the music, and those who beleive that it is okay because 1) Jaun atkins is way beyond due, and 2) The music will survive through its use in commercials.

I think this is a no-brainer myself. explanation (which could be way off - mind you.) but nonetheless is still a way to explain the reactions of the people on this list:

Ford is trying to sell its cars to "us". The young people of around 20, who love music. Ford has seen that music likeness of the next generation is shifting from rock\alternative to electronika based music. Ford being somewhat from Detroit (heck the World headquarters is in Dearborn) has thought that of all the forms of Electronika, Detroit Techno probably would be the best suitible form to gain our (the Gen Y, or whatever they are labeling us now) attention. There have been two reactions to them (Ford) trying to gain our attention.

First, there are those that are attracted. This is exactly what they want, to attract us... its normal to like the things that are presented for us to like. That's why Ford is paying Jaun, to attract those that like Jaun.

Second, are those that are not attracted. For whatever reason they are not attracted. This is also a natural reaction. Some may say that Jaun is "selling out" because he is not keeping the music "underground" (note: I really don't want to start another one of those circumlocuting discussions about what "underground" is - so please don't respond about it.) As we have all learned, "underground" is a very subjective term, and some of the people on this list like the music because it is not mainstream and doesn't have the posers on the top level claiming to be something jsut to make money. Others may not like the car company, or the way in which it is presented.

So forth and so on....
My take-
I personally have just recently purchased a ZX2 after considering the Focus, but my wife decided that the focus was "ugly". If they had started this campaign earlier, Ford would have sold one more Focus...

Cheers,
Dennis

To me this has been an interesting thread. However, it seems to me that the
contradictory viewpoints aren't that complicated:

1. Juan Atkins has been underappreciated. Should get paid.

2. Corporate endorsement of a song, artist, or musical style is of
questionable merit at best, beyond terms of payment.

Question:
If someone can explain to me how the connection between the growth of techno
and automotive industry in detroit is informative in this case, or how any
musical credibility is gained through corporate sponsorship, I would be glad
to hear.

Not as if Mr Atkins has any issues of musical credibility.

actually it sounds to me like your beef is more with commercials than any
set style of music being used within them

Commercials are meant only to manipulate people to the company's will.
thats the whole idea.
i guess im one of those ignorant people that doesn't see how ford focus'
getting sold will destroy techno.
