This is exactly it. Headphone technology is at the level where if you treat them right, they will last 20+ years. I have been looking for headphones like this for years, but I became frustrated at the local selection and ended up getting the Sony 700's. I use headphones for music production primarily, DJ'ing second and then general music listening/gaming. Although the Sony's are solid, I know there is a lot that I am missing. Looks like Sennheiser understands what an audiophile requires.
