downloading undoubtedly has a negative effect on music sales, but there's no doubt that it has a possitive effect either. the recording industry has in my opinion been whining way too long about the negative effects, instead of using the possitive effects, and making the negative effects work in their advantage. or like number 14 uses to say: "there's an advantage to every disadvantage".

on the other hand there are more reasons why you can still not easily download songs of a website, like you can with ringtones. one of them is the way the musicmarket works: the recordingcompany does not sell it's product directly to the consumer, it sells it's product to retailers, who in turn sell it to the public. there have been attempts by the major recordingcompanies, to offer some of their catalog to the public through the internet, but they faced repercussions by their 'customers' the retailers, whom, out of fear of loosing their bussiness, decided not to buy music from that recordcompany any more. as music sales in cd's cassettes etc. was still the main source of income for these recordcompanies, they could not afford to loose their bussiness on one side, to gain a still uncertain new market. i've read a somewhat interesting book about the development of the music-industry from the development of the internet to where it is now. unfortunately it didn't give any thoughts on the [possible] future, but still an interesting read. i've got it somewhere at home, if anyone's interested i could look it up, just let me know.

apart from that i think that setting up a working mp3 distribution, is not an easy thing to do. i've been thinking about it a lot, but there are so many different aspects you'll have to considder. for instance: one person could copy your distribution network, buy all his mp3's at your site, and then sell them for half the price on his own site.

dunno why cd's are as expensive as they are; i think i a cd-album costs something like 21 euro's [about $23] right now in the netherlands [not sure, can't even remember the last time i bought a cd...] whereas a vinyl-album will cost you somewhere between 19 to 28 euro's [about $20-30] you could say that 90% of the cd shop are located in the center of town, so will therefore will have to pay more rent, resulting in higher costs, which will reflect in the price of the product.
