Perhaps the physical/mechanical noise has an effect similar to the
impact noise when striking a keyboard, ie. it forms part of the sound.
Without the introduction of tone-arm noise, maybe the sound is
incomplete...
well there are high-end "audiophile" ttables which have, supposedly,
virtually 0 mechanical noise. if the music industry had embraced vinyl the
way it did cd's they'd probably be consumer grade and affordable by now
instead of audiophile.
anyways, im not pointing to vinyl specifically, but i do think some form of
analog technology is the solution to the record industry's problems with
cd's/mp3s/digital. anything analog will always be much more of a pain in the
ass to bootleg or rip-to-mp3. and by definition analog is higher-fidelity
than digital -- digital is made of blocks of 0's and 1's and is always an
approximation of an original analog, or live, sound. but of course companies
are much too invested in digital media to "go back" to analog development
now..
