OK so much for my first experiment (see below) - my post didn't post! This is me trying again. Only since I composed the below (on Friday) I've had another thought - I too receive some people's posts as unintelligible (to me) code, Greg I missed your explanation (maybe before I joined the list?) for this which you referred to when replying to someone (?Ken?) on this subject. If the people who's posts get mangled like this (Ian Cheshire, Robert Taylor et al) aren't able to change the way they send to stop it happening is there something I can do at my end to receive them intact? (I'm not a PC whizz). It seems some of you do as I think people reply to them - plus it would be a feat of remarkable (if admirable) perversity to keep on sending incomprehensible posts that no one understood!.
First attempt at message (sent Friday 12/3/04): Hello people Experimental first post after joining list a little while ago. Since subscribing I've teetered on the verge of unsubscribing simply because of the volume of stuff I'm receiving - I've started by trying the digest but I'm getting several per day, however I want to continue because there is loads of interest to me on here. Lo and behold a debate ensues about "signal to noise" which covers everything I was thinking. That debate was full and valid points were put on all sides, personally I'm more into finding out about records, gigs etc, not so much into chat and jokes but some are (and they've been here longer than me!) so that's cool - lets carry on happily self moderating. There's just one thing; Greg has asked on a couple of occasions now for people to try and be a bit careful about including large numbers of previous posts in their replies and to try to remove works/ ISP signatures and disclaimers where possible before sending - can I second this? I realise that sometimes (in the case of signatures) this isn't possible or that people might want to put specific bits of previous posts that they're replying to in for reference but outside of that if this stuff was missed off it would hugely reduce the size of posts and make finding what people are actually trying to say easier - I think someone in the S/N debate said "press delete when not interested" but at present it takes some time to find whether you are or not. Hope this makes sense and I haven't overlooked something obvious. And (in chat mode!) hello to various people I've met on my techno wanderings and I see contributing to this list - Tom Magic Feet (some years ago) Brendan from London (recently) and those I'll be joining on the trip to Liverpool to see Kenny Larkin tonight! Francis
