I've gotta say that I really hate that as well, and I'm a guy who does laptop sets. I had to play sitting down once, because the only table available at the gig was much too low to stand at. I've never been so uncomfortable performing. It felt like I was on trial or something.
My solution (or at least attempt at one) is to 1) always stand and 2) fold the laptop screen outwards as much as possible. At least to me, this helps to remove that physical barrier a bit.
