Martin,
Not to belabor the point, but I think your original judgement was a bit harsh.
You are just wrong that people don't use mp3s to find releases to look for in
the store. I do that. If I have heard the mp3 and liked it, I'm much more
likely to buy the vinyl.

If we take the downlow release for example, I know it is run by list members.
I certainly wouldn't want to cut into their business and I know things are
tight. HOWEVER, I don't recall if I've ever heard Convextion, and there's not
much chance I'll see it in the local record store. The best promo they could
do for their release would be let me hear an mp3 of the record, as I will seek
it out if I really like it. If I don't hear it, how am I going to know that I
want to buy it?

The only other possibility would be getting the release on some kind of radio
where I might listen and say "what was that?!" and be on the lookout to
purchase.

Somehow, the independent label has to connect with ME (not me personally but as
an interested music consumer), so that I know what is out there that sounds
good that I want to buy!

I wasn't having a pop and I may be wrong, but I pretty good at being
wrong ;)
I also can't check ever single thread on LD - I find that it pretty
much looks after itself.

I was more interested in peoples views, I know that I buy more records
when I hear something in a mix but
I do refuse to download stuff that hasn't be cleared.

My history is in Typeface design and the amount of times I've seen my
work used by people who I know haven't bought the typeface really kills
me sometimes, although it's great to see my work used by Bowie, B12 and
even Shaggy!!! I look at the returns of spending 300hrs working on
something and wonder why sometimes.

Ken, Rob's just grumpy sometimes ;)
