My friend Ian runs a very successful night playing 60s soul and 80s
indie type stuff - the dancefloor is always jumping and gyrating to the
likes of Solomon Burke and The Smiths, yet he constantly gets asked to
play something that people will dance to, despite the sweating haeving
mess behind them

Most people aren't DJs and don't think like DJs. All they really think
about is, "play something I know, whether it fits in or not."

1. I was playing house and techno in a local lounge (Portland).
The request was for the Beastie Boys. That's not a bad idea though it
was the wrong time for it.

2. Playing in the Oakland Coliseum parking lot after a Grateful Dead
show (we used to set up a sound system there and play one night of every
three-night run, lots of fun actually). Same thing, I was playing some
house stuff and got a request for Primus . . . at least they were local
to the East Bay :)
