Hey Bernard, I would use text values if I didn’t think I needed to do range searches. It’s not a “live” db so I can play and experiment to my hearts content.
Yea I could format the longitudes as “000” and the latitudes as “00” then they sort in order. Of course I have to keep in mind the direction. I like keeping the numbers negative for west of GMT and positive for east of. Thus I will need to either prefix with “+” or “-“ which again keeps them in order to have another separate field. Maybe a text field for longitude degree and a decimal field for longitude holding minutes and seconds. Then I know it’s west because it’s prefixed with “-“ and I can easily recreate the formatted string using both fields. Anyway, I can try many alternatives and see what works. Thanks and be safe, John... > Hi John, > > From the top of my head, indexes on long are less efficient than on text > values ; I have a doubt, perhaps only for updating. > You could test adding two fields with longitude and latitude converted in > text values with appropriate leading zéros for search ? > > Cordialement, > > Bernard Escaich ********************************************************************** 4D Internet Users Group (4D iNUG) Archive: http://lists.4d.com/archives.html Options: https://lists.4d.com/mailman/options/4d_tech Unsub: mailto:[email protected] **********************************************************************
